Char Dham Yatra FAQs

Every year, the Chardham Yatra begins in April or May and lasts until October/November, when the doors of all four temples (Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yumunotri, and Gangotri) are kept open until the day of the "Diwali Festival," which is celebrated every year in October/November. "Diwali festival-Also called Deepawali" is considered one of the main festivals of Hindus, and the dates of this festival are determined by holy saints/Gurus/Priests according to the Hindu calendar). After Diwali, the doors of all temples remain closed for the next five or six months due to heavy snowfall and very cold weather, as all these temples are located in the remote places of Himalayan Mountains, where life is not easy to survive due to uncertain weather conditions

Char Dham refers to four sacred places in India according to Hindu belief. The Chardham of India, which includes Puri, Dwarka, Badrinath, and Rameshwaram, is the most sacred of all pilgrimages. It is believed that visiting these holy shrines located in all four corners of India cleanses one's sins and frees one from the cycle of life and death.

However, some people refer to these places as Char Dham - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinathji (in Uttaranchal), which, while sacred, are not actually Char Dham. Any Dham is a revered place, but "Char Dham" specifically refers to Puri, Dwarka, Badrinath, and Rameshwaram, where four Shankaracharyas reside.

The answer is yes. Thirtha yatra has become very easy in recent years; Yamunotri and Kedarnath are difficult to reach, but you can hire Palki to accompany you, and transportation is very close to the rest of the places.

Please keep in mind that these are high altitude areas, so anyone with respiratory or cardiovascular issues should consult a doctor before visiting.

Chardham Yatra can begin in either Delhi or Haridwar. As India's capital, Delhi is well-connected to the rest of the world and all major cities in India via various flight and train connections. The road connectivity between Delhi and Haridwar is excellent, with a distance of only 210 kilometers and a drive time of approximately 5 hours. One can fly from Delhi to Dehradun (Joly Grant Airport), which is only 41 kilometers (1 hour's drive) from Haridwar.

The nearest railway station in Haridwar is just 16 kilometers before "Har-Ki-Pauri" (Haridwar), and the train journey from Delhi to Haridwar takes approximately 4-5 hours. The Chardham Yatra begins in Delhi and continues through Hardiwar, Barkot, Yamunotri, Uttarkashi, Gangotri, Guptkashi, Kedarnath, Rudraprayag, Badrinath, Joshimath, Srinagar (Garwal), Rishikesh, and back to Delhi. These places can be visited in approximately 12 days from Delhi to Delhi and 11 days from Haridwar to Haridwar.
